The various articles of the Indian Constitution provide for education as a fundamental right.Girls belonging to marginalised social and economic groups are more likely to drop out of school at an early age.But People like MADHAV CHAVAN can make a diffrence.Madhav Chavan, the founder of educational non-profit Pratham, has a singular mission: he wants every Indian to learn to read.
Madhav Chavan was born in Maharastra to Yashwant Chavan.He did his Chemical Engineering from Institute of Chemical Technology, and received his doctorate from Ohio State University(US).Dr Chavan began his social activism helping uneducated slum-dwellers in Mumbai in the late 1980s, when he returned to India after studying in the United States.Working with Unicef and the city authorities, he developed an innovative system for providing lessons for large numbers of people at low cost.Dr. Madhav Chavan also wins the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) Prize for Education awarded on 13th November, 2012(also known as NOBEL for education). The WISE was launched by Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in 2009 upon the initiative of Qatar Foundation Chairperson.He also got Skoll World Forum awards for Social Entrepreneurship 2011.
Dr. MadhavChavan is a co-founder and CE-President of Pratham, an organization that reaches 3 million primary school age children in India every year. Pratham has been recognized by the Kravis Prize and the Skoll Award for its innovativeness and leadership as a social entrepreneurial organization in the area of education.He is also interested in written songs about human rights and women’s rights.
