The Central Govt. has asked the IITs to increase the number of seats significantly for UG as well as PG Courses. As per the Officials, in the 12th 5 year Plan, the Govt. has decided NOT to open new IITs; but to increase the number of seats in already existing ones by a significant number.
The expansion in the number of seats is there on the plan. The Committee headed by Kakodkar has recommended to increase the number of seats from 4,000 or 5,000 to a near number of 20, 000 by the year of 2020. And this increase would be equally divided between UG and PG Courses.
As per the officials, the increase in the number of seats will be much more in the new IITs as compared to older IITs.
