Hacker is somebody who finds weaknesses in a computer or computer network and exploits them through a process called penetration or pentetration testing (depending on the motive). Hackers may be motivated by a multitude of reasons such as profit, protest, challenge, or to aid security by pointing out vulnerabilities. The subculture that has evolved around hackers is often referred to as the computer underground and is now a known community.

Gary McKinnon



Gary McKinnon (born 10 February 1966) is a Scottish systems administrator and hacker who was accused in 2002 of perpetrating the "biggest military computer hack of all time," although McKinnon himself – who has a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome – states that he was merely looking for evidence of free energy suppression and a cover-up of UFO activity and other technologies potentially useful to the public. On 16 October 2012, after a series of legal proceedings in Britain, Home SecretaryTheresa May withdrew his extradition order to the United States.

LulzSec

Lulz Security, commonly abbreviated as LulzSec, is a computer hacker group that claimed responsibility for several high profile attacks, including the compromise of user accounts from Sony Pictures in 2011. The group also claimed responsibility for taking the CIA website offline.

Adrian Lamo

Adrian Lamo is a Colombian-American threat analyst and "grey hathacker. He first gained media attention for breaking into several high-profile computer networks, including those of The New York TimesYahoo!, and Microsoft, culminating in his 2003 arrest. In 2010, Lamo became embroiled in the WikiLeaks scandal involving Bradley Manning, who was arrested after Lamo reported to federal authorities that Manning had leaked hundreds of thousands of sensitive U.S. government documents.

Jonathan James

Jonathan Joseph James (December 12, 1983 – May 18, 2008), a.k.a. c0mrade, was an American hacker who was the first juvenile incarcerated for cybercrime in the United States. The South Florida native was 15 years old at the time of the first offense and 16 years old on the date of his sentencing. He died on May 18, 2008, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kevin Poulsen

Kevin Lee Poulsen (born 1965 in PasadenaCaliforniaU.S.) is an American former black hat hacker who is currently News Editor at Wired.com.
When Kevin Poulsen was 17, he used his primitive TRS-80 "color computer" to hack into the US Department of Defense's Arpanet, the predecessor of the Internet. He wasn't prosecuted. He was later a computer programmer at SRI and Sun Microsystems, and worked as a consultant testing Pentagon computer security.

Kevin Mitnick


Kevin David Mitnick (born on August 6, 1963) is an American computer security consultant, author, convicted criminal, and hacker. In the late 20th century, he was convicted of various computer and communications-related crimes. At the time of his arrest, he was the most-wanted computer criminal in the United States
